The iPhone 4S may feature considerable advances in mobile processor, camera and voice recognition technologies, but its success is still reliant on the ever-thriving thriving App Store. Here are five free apps that should take advantage of the iPhone 4S’s sharp new hardware features.
Instagram
Instagram’s been near the top of many people’s favourite apps list ever since its release a year ago. So what’s so special about it on iPhone 4S? It’s the same photo-sharing app, but of course the camera in the iPhone 4S is much improved. It’s quicker, better quality and its low-light performance is significantly more impressive. This means that you’ll have more high quality photos to share with your friends over Instagram – with the app’s custom filters adding the usual touch of class.
Adobe Photoshop Express
If you’re taking a lot more photos on your iPhone 4S, you’ll be wanting to do a whole lot more editing. Of course, there are some new editing options on the device itself, but for that extra level of control and fine tuning we recommend Adobe Photoshop Express. As well as the usual crop and rotate commands, you can add filters, effects and borders as well as change the colour and contrast levels of your snaps.

Google Earth
You’ve probably had a go on Google Earth on your computer by now – the way you can scan and zoom into any part of the world and get real satellite imagery never ceases to amaze. That you can do that on your phone is even more amazing. Of course, you’ve been able to this for a while, but thanks to the iPhone 4S’s zippy dual-core processor and stupidly powerful GPU it’s faster and slicker than ever.
Dropbox
We go on about Dropbox a lot on this site, but then it is the most popular cloud-based file management tool around. It lets you upload your files into remote server storage, where they can then be seamlessly accessed from any of your mobile devices – including your iPhone 4S, courtesy of this app. With the iPhone 4S’s new HSDPA network capabilities, upload and download speeds have the potential to be significantly speedier than on previous iPhones.
Spotify
The iPhone 4S’s upgraded radio chip and intelligent antenna set-up means that your network connection will be stronger and more stable than before, so there’s never been a better iPhone to enjoy the delights of Spotify on. You should be able to stream your favourite music over a 3G network connection with fewer drop-outs and interruptions – and Spotify’s accomplished caching technology should help cover the occasions when there really is no connection (this time through no fault of Apple’s)
